The American Dream and its many shades of grey has always been one of film's favorite subjects, not only in America itself but in all countries which went through a certain degree of immigration culture. Hong Kong films like Stanley Kwan's Full Moon in New York showed how important this cultural element can be, but a few years earlier the monumental success of Bae Chang Ho's Deep Blue Night made an even bigger impression. The film, Bae's second huge success after People in the Slums, was adapted from a novel written by Choi In Ho, one of Korea's most important writers whose works also include Hometown of the Stars, Firebird, and Whale Hunting, which was later adapted by none other than Bae Chang Ho into one of the best films of the 80s.
