Superstars Cecilia Cheung and Choi Min Sik turn in fantastic performances in 2001's Failan, a touching romance with a curious twist. Filmmaker Song Hae Sung, director of Calla and Rikidozan adapts Jiro Asada's novel to the big screen, telling the story of a star-crossed married couple who have never actually met face to face. One half of the story centers on the beautiful Failan (Cecilia Cheung, from One Nite in Mongkok) who immigrates to Korea to seek out her only living next of kin after the death of her parents. However, once Failan arrives there, she discovers the disappointing truth - her relatives have since moved to Canada. Hoping to stay in Korea, the young immigrant pays for an arranged paper marriage through a matchmaking service in order to secure a work permit.
